Sara says
Err, how are these refined-sugar free? I checked the first one and it contains rice malt syrup. The second one contains coconut sugar. Both are refined sugars...
Bianca says
Hi Sara, I've did a bit of research before putting it together and found a list of unrefined sugars to which I stuck choosing the recipes. I think it's hard because some of the less refined sugars are often defined as unrefined sugars - this is the interpretation that I've chosen too. But I'm no expert, if you have any additional infos, I'd love to learn more about it :)
Sara says
There is no set definition for "refined sugar". I understand it's difficult to define. But you see how you're still using the word "refined" to describe the sugar? Even though it's "less refined"? I still consider that refined, even though it's less.
The article you linked to says that the sugars listed are better because they contain nutrition. It doesn't seem like she did her homework because per serving (tablespoon) not all of the sugars contain a substantial amount of nutrition. I consider next to no nutrition to be negligible. Just like 10 extra calories every day won't cause you to gain weight, 0.1 mg of a vitamin or mineral doesn't make that much of a difference to the body.
She also uses the appeal to nature argument. Appeal to nature is a logical fallacy (https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/appeal-to-nature). It's a way we make ourselves feel better when we eat refined sugar. When in reality, it's no better in the grand spectrum of things.
Bianca says
Thank you for the input, Sara. Good to know! I just went with the broader understanding of "refined sugar-free", but I'll be doing another collection of only fruit-sweetened desserts in the future - all natural and healthy :)
Lana Drebes says
I'm totally ignorant Bianca, thank you "sugar free" back in my day meant "NO SUGAR" Period! That's what I expect. Thanks sweetie!
Roxanne says
Jeez, use a different sugar then you ninny. No recipe is set in stone. Go police another blog.
Coconutsugarfairy says
I have to laugh at ridiculous comments like the above criticising the recipes!
Most of the general public wouldn't even KNOW what coconut sugar is, or rice malt syrup, or date syrup or any of the other healthier alternatives to table sugar!
They would consider them 'weird'.
Yet we are all so used to them, that in some minds, anything that tastes good must be relegated to the 'Junk food Bin".
If it's not your idea of healthy, move along...
The amount of work that goes into putting together ONE recipe for a blog post is immense, let alone a whole collection of 20 great recipes to choose from, all for free to the consumer, who then can come along and cherry pick and nit pick about any minutae thing that they choose, instead of being grateful and saying "hey, thanks for the great site" or some other positive thing, or just moving along if it's not to their liking....
People are just self important and rude these days, criticising then moving along with not another thought, leaving the person who has worked so hard on the blog feeling low and wondering why they even bother!
I must say I was impressed with the grace Bianca had when replying!
Sara, looking forwards to seeing your blog full of truly "refined sugar free" desserts so we can all learn what we should be eating!
Bianca says
I'm glad you're joining in on the conversation! :)
The different comments portray perfectly that there is such a huge difference in knowledge about sugar and alternatives in the society. Some are happy with the healthier alternatives mentioned here, while others are very strict about the word "refined sugar" and I totally get it. Everyone wants to share their knowledge and I appreciate it. I'm certainly no expert in healthy eating but I love to learn and I see everything as a journey. When I started this blog, I knew very little about vegan cooking, now I've got over 200+ vegan recipes on here and I enjoyed the journey so far.
So even when people are criticizing my posts (constructive or rude), I don't want to ignore the fact that a lot of people are enjoying them (even if they don't write comments). Sweet comments and mails from readers who tell me that they are loving my recipes or that my recipes and articles are helping them trying/maintaing a vegan lifestyle is what keeps me going.
<3 Lots of love for this comment! Thank you, coconutsugarfairy <3

Rowan says
Hi - I'm confused, why is agave syrup considered refined and maple syrup not? They are both made in relatively similar processes. Sap removed, filtered, and boiled?
Brown rice syrup seems even more refined. "Brown rice (malt) syrup, also known as rice syrup or rice malt, is a sweetener derived by culturing cooked rice starch with saccharifying enzymes to break down the starches, followed by straining off the liquid and reducing it by evaporative heating until the desired consistency is reached." I mean - that sounds super processed! Brown rice isn't very sweet to begin with... brown rice syrup also has a glycemic index of 98 where table sugar is only 68...
Just trying to get some clarification

I would just like to say that it would be nice if you all had sugar free and flourless and recipes bc I have type 1 diabetes but I'm also vegan so if someone could that it would be so awesome!😃

There's little difference between refined and unrefined, whatever u mean by that. If a food is processed in some manner it seems refined to me. Dates contain 64g sugar per 100g, and can't claim to be healthy eaten in some of the quantities required in these recipes. Coconut sugar has no significant difference to white sugar. Both have 16 calories and 4g of sugar per teaspoon. Agave is a very highly processed product. It is all sugar to your body. When will sugar free actually mean sugar free, using syrup instead and think its fine is just an illusion.
