Vegan Za'atar Breadsticks

These vegan Za'atar Breadsticks are the perfect party snack. They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. So yummy! And you'll only need 6 ingredients!

These simple vegan Za'atar Breadsticks are not hard to make at all. You'll need some time to let the dough rise, but other than that, they are hardly any work!

I can only recommend giving these a try, especially if you're a fan of the za'atar spice blend - like me. And if you're not a fan of za'atar, I'm including more topping ideas below!

The idea of Za'atar Breadsticks came to me when I was thinking about a new snack for a party. I didn't want to serve the same old (but still awesomely delicious) crackers, so breadsticks popped into my mind. I actually ended up serving crackers & breadsticks - because there's never too much food at parties, am I right?

So what is Za'atar?

Za'atar is a traditional herb and spice blend of the Eastern Mediterranean cuisine. It's a mix of dried sumac berries, marjoram, thyme, basil, oregano, white sesame seeds, and Himalayan pink salt. There are a few different za'atar spice mixes out there, but basically, these are the usual ingredients. If you can't find Za'atar in your local supermarket, you can always order it online.

How to make vegan breadsticks

The ingredients

You will need:

  • flour (all-purpose wheat flour)
  • instant yeast
  • salt
  • oil
  • water
  • za'atar spice mix

Of course, you can add all kinds of seeds or herbs on top instead of the Za'atar. How about some sesame, rosemary or poppy seed breadsticks?

The basic steps

yeast dough in a container

Step 1: First we're making the dough. Combine the dry ingredients, then add the wet ones. Stir to combine. Knead into a dough. Let it rise for 1-2 hours.

Step 2: Once you have a smooth & risen dough, roll it out (like pizza), brush it with olive oil and sprinkle it with the Za'atar spice blend.

Step 3: Cut the dough in strips - this works best with a pizza cutter. You can create really long, thin breadsticks, or you can cut them in half too if you want shorter ones.

Step 4: These are the breadsticks after baking: They are perfectly crisp on the outside, soft & chewy on the inside. Carefully break them apart.

Step 5: And done! I've served them with a vegan cheese sauce.

More crowd-pleasing vegan snacks

  • Za'atar Crackers
  • Soft Baked Pretzels
  • Crispy Bread Chips
  • Pretzel Garlic Knots
  • Rosemary Crackers

I hope you enjoy these breadsticks as much as I do! Let me know if you give them a try!

Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil + 1 ½ teaspoons olive oil for brushing the dough
  • ⅓ cup lukewarm water
  • 3 teaspoons za'atar spice blend

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and instant yeast. Then add the olive oil and water. Stir to combine, then knead with your hands (or use a kitchen machine with a dough hook) until it's a smooth dough. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour; if it's too crumbly, add more water.
  • Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it sit in a warm place until it doubles in size (for about 1-2 hours).
  • Preheat the oven to 250 °C or 480 °F.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured baking sheet, like you would with pizza, and brush the dough with the olive oil. Sprinkle the za'atar on top.
  • With a pizza cutter, cut the dough in strips. Pop it in the oven for about 15 minutes, until it gets a nice golden color. Carefully break them apart and done!

So I know I voted for cotton candy ice cream, but I've really been looking forward to these too. Not only because Za'atar is fun to say but also because I love your bread recipes and I've never made breadsticks! As always, you make it much simpler than I expected :) These would be the perfect accompaniment to a big salad for dinner!

Same here! I love saying Za'atar, I have no idea if I'm pronouncing it correctly, but I don't care :D And you're totally right, these breadsticks would be the perfect side for a huge bowl of salad. I didn't even think of that, but I will totally make that combination sometime when it's warmer and when salads are more main-meal appropriate.

I love carbs so much. I need to get into doing breads for my blog because that would be so delicious! I've not heard of this spice blend, but I must look it up!

Hahaha :D I love carbs too, but I always feel guilty saying it out loud because carbs got such a bad rep. Za'atar is one of these spice blends that are super trendy right now - like ras el hanout. I love cooking with various spices and spice blends, so trending spice blends are the perfect excuse for me buy them all :D I admit, I'm a spice hoarder. I can only recommend making breads and such from scratch, it's so satisfying.

Hi, I just found your recipe for these delicious breadsticks recently. My daughter with multiple food allergies loves them and we've also turned then into pizza base for her. I was just curious, can I freeze the dough once I rolled them out? I was planning on making some individual pizza bases for her. Thanks in advance.

I haven't tried out freezing the rolled-out crusts, but I couldn't think of anything why it wouldn't work.

I made these and they were really good, except that they were all burnt on top and the oven was smoking. I could tell they'd be rlly good if the oven wasn't so hot, so if you have fan forced oven maybe do it at 180 and check if it needs longer after 15 min. thx for the recipe :)
