Budapest is the capital of Hungary and offers lots of delicious options for vegans! In this post, I'm sharing my favorite places to eat vegan in Budapest. Let's get started!

Vegan in … is a series of posts on Elephantastic Vegan where I write about my vegan travelling experiences. I love to travel, especially to larger cities, rather than spending my days on the beach at some resort, but finding restaurants with vegan options in a foreign city isn't always that easy. With this post, I want to show you awesome places to eat for your next trip to Budapest in Hungary! :)
It's never a bad idea to use HappyCow to get a neat overview of your vegan eating possibilities.
I haven't even had the chance to try all of the vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants in Budapest because the city is HUGE and has quite a lot to offer for vegans, and I was only there for four days. So naturally, this post only contains the few options I've tested and tried.
If you're in a country with a language you're not fluent with, it's always risky to order vegan food in restaurants that are not 100% vegan. Due to language barriers, I'm always worried about messing it up and ordering something by accident, but I shouldn't have worried, because every person we interacted with on our holiday was speaking English quite well, so there were no miscommunications and no non-vegan accidents! Yay!
First, a little bit of sightseeing, which we had to cut short because of the heatwave, but we still managed to stroll around in the early and late hours and take some photos.

Popolare

Király Street 36, Budapest
No city trip is complete without an Avo Toast, and this was an exceptionally delicious Avocado Toast with sourdough bread. My boyfriend, fiancé, husband tried the Vegan Trippa (which tasted like falafel in a tomato sauce) and it was also delish! If you're in Budapest, definitely go to Popolare because the location is straight out of a Wes Anderson movie. We actually stayed in the Hotel Wonder to which the restaurant belongs because everything looks so beautiful there- lots of photo ops!
Lion's Locker

1061, Budapest, Vasvári Pál utca 11.
Lion's Locker is a storage facility for luggage with a coffee shop/cocktail bar/breakfast place/everything you need. While the smoked tofu scramble toast was the only savory vegan item on the menu, it was by no means a last choice. It was absolutely delicious! Definitely would have gone there another time if we stayed a couple of days longer in Budapest. And the iced caramel oat latte was amazing as well! They have bottomless mimosa brunch two days a week - too bad we went to the Széchenyi Thermal Baths directly after breakfast; otherwise, I would have made use of the mimosas. But I chose not to drown in the baths that day.
Vegazzi Pizzeria

1066 Budapest, Jókai utca 7.
Give me a pizza menu, and I'm definitely going to order the weirdest one. Pea cream? Check! Brussels sprouts on pizza? Count me in! The pizzeria is a vegetarian place, but there are lots of vegan options on the menu. The pizza dough is literally to die for. Can I please get a bed out of the dough, I'm going to sleep like on clouds?!
Retro Langos

Budapest, Vécsey u. 3, 1054 Hungary + another location
Eating langos was on our foodie bucket list for Hungary. At the Retro Langos restaurant, there were two vegan options: one with sour cream and cheese, and the other one with additional veggies on top. I was a little sceptical because reviews weren't too positive regarding the vegan options, but I found the vegan cheese really delicious and soft. I've definitely had other vegan cheeses before which were grainy and hard when cold, which would have been a disaster, but this one was really a great fit for the langos!
Vegan Garden

1061 Budapest, Király u. 8-10.
Beautiful restaurant with 100% vegan food and a huge menu. We went there two times during our Budapest trip. We tried the Caesar Salad, Roasted Potatoes with soy meat, mushroom paprikash, vegan catfish paprikash with cheesy noodles, and the highlights of our trip: Cream Cake. Everything was yummy. The vegan catfish was especially interesting (I always try items from a menu that I've never eaten before). My guess would have been that it was pressed and baked vegan tuna from a jar. Very interesting, and never tried anything like that before! It definitely inspired me to try something like that for the blog. The cream cake reminded me of my childhood; I wish I could have gotten another 10 to take home with me!
Szabad Bisztró

Király utca 101, Budapest
Szabad is a 100% vegan gastropub, offering burgers, traditional Hungarian dishes, and bar food. I love that you can order anything, and everything is delicious. The dirty fries were naughty af and look at that rice paper bacon! The lecsó was another item on our foodie bucket list, I'm so glad we tried such a homemade, fresh version of that. This healed my frozen-lecso-childhood-trauma!
Budapest in a nutshell: Huuuuge city, very clean, beautiful architecture, a vegan paradise, not a lot of traffic noise for such a big city, lots of stylish bars and restaurants, definitely worth a visit! I'll be back <3
So this was all the food I had during my Budapest Trip. Have you ever been there? Do you have any additional vegan-friendly restaurant tips for Budapest? I'd love to know in the comments!
