Vegan Seitan Steak

Recipe for a vegan Seitan Steak made out of vital wheat gluten. It's the perfect 'meaty' alternative for a fancy Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner!

  • 1 cup vital wheat gluten
  • 1/4 cup chickpea flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Additional ingredients for grilling the seitan in the pan

  • 1 teaspoon canola oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce


  • Combine all the dry ingredients for the seitan in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix the soy sauce, water and sesame oil. Now add the wet ingredients to the dry ones and stir to combine and knead the dough for a couple of minutes (or use a kitchen machine to let it knead the seitan!). 
  • Prepare a large pot (filled with a couple of inches of water) with a steaming basket and bring to high heat. 
  • Divide the seitan in 4 equal pieces and roll them out. Add the seitan steaks into the steaming basket and let it steam for about half an hour, flipping them after 15 minutes. 
  • Heat a grilling pan, add canola oil and soy sauce and grill the seitan steaks just for 1-2 minutes on both sides for nice grilling marks. And they're ready to serve!
