Disclaimer: The organic vegan cheese shreds were provided to me by Wilmersburger. The opinion in this post and on the blog in general is my own & honest.
Wilmersburger launched an organic line of their vegan cheeses in fall 2014. I’ve been a huge fan of their vegan cheeses before and was really pleased when I heard to get the chance to test the new products. I use Wilmersburger’s products in many recipes, because it’s really convenient and I love to have the opportunity to support vegan cheese manufacturers. I still remember the time when there were no vegan cheeses in the supermarket, so I really appreciate this new development.
About the Products
Wilmersburger is a german company specializing on vegan cheeses. They offer vegan cheese shreds called “Wilmersburger Pizzaschmelz”, slices and wedges. The slices are available in many different flavors: Cheddar, Chili, Classic, Herbs, Paprika, Mushroom, Tomato-Basil and Spicy. As of 2014 they introduced an organic line with two kinds of vegan cheese shreds: a mild flavor and a strong flavor.
All products are vegan, GMO-free and soy-free. Most of the products are gluten-free. (The new organic kinds contain gluten)
As I already said, I’m a big fan of Wilmersburger’s vegan cheese selection. I’m using it a lot in my everyday cooking and I appreciate the availability, the huge assortment and I really like the taste. What I immediately noticed while cooking with the new organic cheese shreds is that they melt way better than non-organic ones. I’ve been mixing a little bit of soy cream with the shreds to help them melt, but this isn’t necessary anymore with the new line. The stronger flavor was a little bit too strong for me and most of the recipes, but the milder flavor is great! But nevertheless I think there are recipes that go well with any of the cheeses, and also benefit from a stronger flavor.
I used Wilmersburger’s Organic Pizza Shreds with the stronger flavor in a Philly Cheesesteak Sub. For the filling I made some seitan, sliced it thinly, pan-fried it and added the cheese that adds a wonderful creamy taste to it. You’ll find all my recipes using Wilmersburger here.
